अनुवाद:
एक बार एक जादूगर घर लौट रहा था। अचानक बहुत तेज़ बारिश होने लगी। उसने आश्रय (छिपने की जगह) के लिए चारों ओर देखा और उसे एक छोटा देवदार (Fir) का पेड़ दिखाई दिया। वह दौड़कर वहाँ गया और शरण ली। जल्द ही बारिश रुक गई।
जादूगर ने पेड़ से कहा, "धन्यवाद! तुम मेरे प्रति बहुत दयालु रहे हो। मैं तुम्हें इनाम देना चाहता हूँ। चार इच्छाएँ माँगो, और मैं उन्हें पूरा करूँगा।" जादूगर ने कहा।
देवदार के पेड़ की पत्तियाँ सुई जैसी थीं और कोई भी पक्षी उनमें अपना घोंसला नहीं बनाता था। इसलिए उसने कहा, "मेरी इच्छा है कि मेरी पत्तियाँ मेरे अन्य दोस्तों की तरह हरी हों।"
अगली सुबह, उसकी इच्छा पूरी हो गई। जल्द ही एक बकरी आई और उसने सारी हरी पत्तियाँ खा लीं। "ओह! प्रिय," देवदार के पेड़ ने कहा, "मेरी इच्छा है कि मेरे पास सोने की पत्तियाँ हों।"
जब छोटा देवदार का पेड़ अगली सुबह जागा, तो वह सोने की पत्तियाँ देखकर हैरान रह गया। एक आदमी आया और उसने सोने की सारी पत्तियाँ चुरा लीं।
इस बार देवदार के पेड़ ने कहा, "मेरी इच्छा है कि मेरे पास काँच की पत्तियाँ हों। आदमी काँच की पत्तियाँ नहीं चुराते।" रात में हवा चली और काँच की सारी पत्तियाँ टूट गईं।
देवदार के पेड़ ने कहा, "मुझे मेरी पुरानी सुई जैसी पत्तियाँ वापस चाहिए, ताकि बकरियाँ उन्हें न खा सकें, आदमी उन्हें न चुरा सकें और हवा उन्हें न तोड़ सके।"
पेड़ सो गया। जब वह अगली सुबह जागा, तो उसकी सुई जैसी पत्तियाँ फिर से वापस आ गई थीं।
