अतुल ने अखबार में एक विज्ञापन (advertisement) पढ़ा - "आप अपना खुद का रोबोट बना सकते हैं, एक ऐसा रोबोट जो फुदकता (hops) है।"
जैसे ही उसने यह पढ़ा, वह उत्साह से बोला, "अब मैं अपना खुद का फुदकने वाला रोबोट बना सकता हूँ।" वह तेजी से दुकान की ओर भागा और एक 'रोबोट किट' खरीद लाया।
घर पहुँचकर उसने रोबोट के सभी हिस्सों को जोड़ा (assembled) और उसका नाम 'बॉबी' रखा। लेकिन अतुल बॉबी को फुदका नहीं पा रहा था। उसने निर्देशों (instructions) को ध्यान से पढ़ा और उसे फिर से जोड़ने की कोशिश की, लेकिन वह असफल रहा।
अतुल ने अपनी माँ को मदद के लिए बुलाया। माँ ने भी बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन वह भी बॉबी को फुदका नहीं सकीं। अतुल के पिता यह देखने अंदर आए कि वे क्या कर रहे थे। एक के बाद एक, घर में सभी ने कोशिश की। कोई भी बॉबी को फुदका नहीं सका।
अंत में अतुल की बहन, माला ने पैकेट पर दुकान का फोन नंबर देखा। उसने दुकानदार को फोन लगाया। उसने पूछा, "बॉबी फुदक क्यों नहीं रहा है?" दुकानदार ने जवाब दिया, "सभी हिस्सों को जोड़ने के बाद आपको इसके सिर पर थपथपाना (tap) होगा।"
अब अतुल ने बॉबी के सिर पर थपथपाया। चमत्कार देखिये, बॉबी फुदकने लगा!
रोबोट बॉबी पूरे कमरे में फुदकने लगा। अतुल ने अपने दोस्तों को इसके साथ खेलने के लिए बुलाया। उसके एक दोस्त प्रशांत ने पूछा, "तुम्हारे रोबोट के अन्य कार्य (functions) क्या हैं?"
अतुल ने उत्तर दिया, "यह चलता है, बोलता है और अपने हाथ भी हिलाता है।"
